Think stretching is a just a way for your PT to (pardon the pun!) stretch out your session? Think again! Stretching is an important part of your routine, both before and after – and is just as important as your work out!
The ways stretching works for you include:
• Helping to increase your overall flexibility, meaning over time, stretching will assist with your workouts, posture, and sense of comfort.
• It aids circulation, ensuring you are ready for your workout, and you have a proper cool-down afterward.
• It can improve overall muscle tone and aesthetic.
• Stretching increases your joint elasticity, which helps to stop joint pain after your workout! You could also look into getting a foam roller to assist if this is something you currently struggle with.
• Stretching has also been known to reduce stress and restore normal breathing patterns, which is especially important at the end of your workout.
Follow these handy tips to ensure you get the most out of your workout so you aren’t walking around too sore!
• With any stretch, ensure that you hold it for at least 30 seconds to truly relax. It may seem long, but in truth, this is the time it takes for your body’s natural stretch to reflex (what stops you from dislocating your shoulder when you throw something!). Only then can a true stretch happen!
• Whilst you should ‘feel’ a stretch, it should not cause significant pain or discomfort. Make sure you ease into the position to a level that is right for you.
• Maintain your breathing to a normal level whilst stretching.
• If you are unsure if you are stretching correctly or would like some pointers on technique, consider booking a 1-on-1 personal trainer session, or if you aren’t in the area, find assistance with the Your Best online coaching program for an online trainer who can assist you with your individual needs.
Remember, I am hear to help you create BALANCE and live your best life! Make sure you are looking after yourself and making your workout count with a good hearty stretch at the beginning and end of your session.
