You’ve consulted a nutrition coach. You’ve educated yourself about the benefits of fuelling your body with unprocessed wholefoods. You’ve collected a bunch of healthy recipes which you’re keen to try. You’re excited about your journey towards a healthier, fitter body. What could possibly go wrong?

Other people, that’s what.

Many of your family and friends simply won’t understand what you’re doing. Some will want you to continue eating the way people in your family have always eaten. Others will insist that you’re ‘missing out’. A few will try to convince you that their current fad diet is actually the path to greater health, wealth, and happiness.

Here are four tips to help you to stick to your game plan when you encounter resistance from the people around you.

#1 Focus on how your new habits make you feel

Don’t get caught up in external improvements like a slimmer waist or leaner thighs. Not only does it take time for your body to reflect your new healthy habits, but external appearances really aren’t the main game. Instead, keep your focus on how your body feels when you make great choices, and on how much pride you feel in yourself for making them. Being confident and happy in your own decisions is a great defence against negativity from those around you.

#2 Be honest about the effort it takes to create positive change

Don’t expect making significant lifestyle changes to be easy, and don’t waste valuable time and energy trying to convince other people that it is. Instead, be upfront. Show those around you that what you’re doing is worth some hard work – and feel your own confidence grow in the process

#3 Don’t be afraid to ask for support

Bringing family and friends on board as team members can be a great way of reducing their resistance, so emphasise how important this path is to you and ask for any support you need. You may just find that your loved ones are willing to support you, even if they struggle to understand the choices you’re making. If the people around you are particularly negative or you need expert knowledge, consider seeking out a nutrition coach for additional support.

#4 Own your choices – and celebrate your results

Ultimately, while there may be a crowd of loud voices shouting advice from behind you, they’re not driving the bus. You are. That may seem scary, but it’s actually incredibly empowering. YOU choose how to treat your body, YOU are responsible for caring for your health, and YOU are the one who will reap the rewards of your good choices.
