Is your mind ready to be refocused so that it can enjoy the healthier side fo life? Sometimes, it’s about simplifying your taste concepts so you can really enjoy nature’s flavours.
Put your phone down
For the sake of becoming more present and calming the mind, it is good practice to leave the phone off or away from the eating area. Doing this can immediately allow the eyes to adjust to the natural light. This also helps the other senses to balance out. When you begin eating, the full flavour can settle over the palette of the tongue. The smell can penetrate the olfactory sense and then the full flavour can be experienced more. They say eating is mostly done with the eyes and it’s true! Spend time actually constructing your perfect bite, and look at what you are eating. This will help your body to register what’s happening to it and know when it has had enough.
Eat mindfully
You may have heard of this recommendation before. It is a fairly popular practice in many cultures. However, the beauty of being mindful is washing away the white noise and technology. There are many distractions around us and the pressure to get things done generally makes us want to multitask, even at dinner time! Rushing food generally means we do not savour the taste, smell or beauty, but also it increases the chance of indigestion. Here we advise you to ‘slow down’! Take a moment to really set up a dining area. If you can, turn off the television and construct a nicely lit area where your body can sit and relax while you refuel it.
Gratefulness
Last but, of course, not least is practising gratefulness. So often overlooked in our consumerist world, it is an important part of mindfulness to understand how the food came to you. It may sound airy-fairy, but give it a go. You have a long day at work and you come home to a delicious meal cooked by you or someone you love. Let’s show gratefulness for that kindness. Beyond that, who grew this food? Acknowledging the origins of your meals can refocus the mind to be aware of the effort, love and work that is behind your meal. Appreciation is a powerful way to really enjoy the flavours of your plate.
