When you are trying to make changes to your eating habits, one of the biggest challenges can be sticking to the habits or goals you’ve set when dining out, as choices are limited and healthy options may not be so readily available. If you’re aiming towards a healthier lifestyle goal and are worried about how to stick to it while eating out, here are five ways to help.

1. Prioritise Vegetables

Browse the menu for choices with vegetables, so that you know you’re getting nutrition in your meal. This could even mean choosing dishes with tomato based sauces, rather than cream or cheese based sauces. Vegetables may be available as side orders or substitutes, so be sure to read the menu carefully before choosing.

2. Eat lean meats

Choosing lean meats is a great way to ensure a healthier meal option. Look for chicken or fish dishes to avoid eating meats that are too fatty. This is a really simple way to eat well without compromising on delicious food.

3. Substitute fries

In many restaurants you can substitute fries for a different side. Even if the menu doesn’t state this option it is always worth asking your server as it may well be possible. Substituting fries for a side salad or vegetables is an easy way to switch fried foods for a fresh, healthy alternative.

4. Try smaller portions

Some restaurants offer smaller portions, or half portions, of certain meals. By doing this you can enjoy the same tasty food but without excessive portion sizes. Not only is this healthier, but it saves you money as well, making it an all round win.

5. Be mindful of drinks

It’s so easy to think about what you are eating that you may forget to watch what you drink. Try and avoid sugary, fizzy drinks and ask for diet or zero sugar options instead. It can also be wise to avoid alcoholic drinks that contain too much sugar, such as alcopops or gin and tonic.

Eating out does not have to be a compromise in your diet. You should also remember that a well balanced diet means that you can treat yourself in moderation. For more advice on eating well, contact a nutrition coach today.
